It’s strange how silence-a tool I wield so often-has become a stranger when I try to describe it. My favorite companion in moments of anger and uncertainty, my run-to in awkward conversations has suddenly grown unrecognizable. And yet, in this noisy, ever-spinning world, it feels more precious than ever. The silence I’m talking about isn’t just an absence of sound, but a deliberate act of stillness. The kind that changes us.
Silence is my go-to in many situations: when faced with controversial debates, rhetorical questions after long night outs, or even when navigating the social etiquette of new environments. And maybe among the top things that’s keeping me from climbing the corporate ladder fast enough. Out here silence is no virtue, we have to work and make noise about it twice as hard. I digress.
The intentional silence I strive to cultivate feels increasingly difficult to practice in a world that keeps spinning and shouting. We struggle to remain silent when we disagree with someone or feel provoked by strangers’ choices. And yet silent treatment we can dish out at our loved ones easily.
But I have recently come to understand that silence-true, intentional silence-is transformative. Studies show that just dedicating just 15 minutes to mindful quiet can improve our health, emotional well-being, and inner peace. When coupled with other growth practices, these few moments of stillness can calm the chaos within.
However, as with everything that challenges us to grow, this kind of silence doesn’t come easy. It is not quiet at all. It’s loud. With thoughts and emotions we’d rather avoid. It calls us to confront our fears and dreams, to declutter the unimportant and make space for what truly matters. Sitting with silence forces us to face hidden pieces of ourselves-and that discomfort, while unsettling, is growth.
Intentional silence isn’t about retreating or avoiding. It’s about diving deeper, listening to what rises from within and embracing the loudness of stillness. It is rather challenging but worth it. Because out of that unquiet silence emerges clarity, strength and the quiet power to grow.
