To Your Own Applause

There’s a quote I used to read, and have come across severally: “You have to go on even if no one is clapping for you.” Back then, it didn’t make much sense to me. I’d think, “Why would anyone stop just because no one is clapping? That was coming from a place of comfort- a place where I wasn’t really doing anything that required courage or risk. I was surviving, not striving. There was nothing to clap for, and nothing to miss if no one did.

But now? I kinda get it.

When we start doing things that matter to us- things that stretch us, scare, excite- I feel like it’s natural to want someone to notice. To cheer. To say, “I see you. I see what you’re trying to do.” That kind of validation feels good. It’s human. We’re wired for connection. For shared joy.

It may come, it may not. Some days the cheering may be loud. Some not so much.

And the absence of applause is not a reason to stop.

When chasing something that sets your soul on fire, you’ll often do it alone. You’ll journal through the noise, run through the ache, write through the doubt. You’ll show up when no one’s watching. And that’s where the real magic happens. It also makes your applause the only one that really counts.

Because you know what it took. The effort, the discipline, the tiny victories. You know the cost. Aren’t you, then, the most qualified to clap for yourself?

So do it. Clap as hard as you want. Celebrate the quiet wins. Honor the messy progress. Then proceed.

Because the applause might come later- or it might not. But your soul will know you showed up. And that’s worth everything.

  1. And the absence of applause is not a reason to stop. It took me a while to really get this but now I can say this; the applause might come later- or it might not. But my soul knows I showed up. And that’s worth everything.
