History in Real Time

Daily writing prompt
What historical event fascinates you the most?

Fascinating usually implies something wondrous and inspiring. It is used to describe captivating things-the really good ones. And while my wish it do just that. To engage your eyes and mind with something inspiring, today I can’t offer that. My heart is heavy.

We are living through history. The kind that leaves children orphaned, cities in ruins, and humanity gasping for breath.

Sudan is bleeding.

In El-Fasher, over 1,500 civilians were massacred in just three days. The RSF have turned Darfur into a graveyard. Hospital re bombed. Children are executed. They say it’s ethnic cleansing. Unfolding in real time. More than 40,000 lives lost, 14 million displaced and even more millions starving.

Wars are complicated. I know. There are sponsors, factions and narratives. We pick sides. We analyze funding. We debate who’s “right.” But does it make it easier to stomach if the perpetrator is a ” bad guy”? Does knowing who funded the bullet help the child who starves?

I understand the need to trace the roots of conflict. But sometimes, that feels beside the point. Because the point is: people are dying. And we are watching. Helplessly.

As a reader, I’ve often been accused of living in a bubble-escaping into beautiful worlds while the real one burns. But today, I can’t escape. I won’t. We have seen raw, unedited images. Read the reports and the helplessness just doubles. What am I doing about it? What can I do?

This post may not feed a starving child. It has no power to stop a bullet. But it refuses to let silence win. We are one.
