Pause.

What would your life be like without music?

What is a heart without its beat? Would it even be life still?

I believe life itself is a series of rhythms and beats-ups and downs, highs and lows-all strumming together to create the beautiful rhythms that is existence. The birds sing, the oceans hum. Nature sings. There’s no life without music, and no music without life.

But since you asked..

Confused: Music is how some of us understand ourselves. Sometimes, emotions are too complex to express in words. But then a song plays, and suddenly everything makes sense. Music helps to realize we have been settling for less, that maybe we should text that crush, that heartbreak is coming-and it helps heal when it finally does.

Who are we?

Here in Africa-Kenya, to be specific- music is woven into ours daily lives. It’s more than entertainment; it’s a tool for preserving culture. Traditional songs carry the wisdom of generations, keeping our heritage alive even as modern sounds evolve. You can often tell where an artist comes from just by the rhythm of their music. It’s our fingerprint. Our identity. Unity.

A wedding without music? Unthinkable. The dancing- the bridal party, the parents, the strangers- it’s what makes the occasion whole. I dont even like weddings, but the music? I’m in. And it’s not just weddings. Burials too. Music helps us hide our tears, celebrate life, and find comfort. We have songs for different occasions. Without music, these wouldn’t  be occasions at all.

Power and resistance.

Music is a tool. And like any tool, its impact depends on who wields it. During colonal rule in Kenya, indigenous musical forms like drum performances were suppressed and replaced with European instruments and styles. It was cultural assimilation through sound. But music is resilient. We can reclaim it. We can use it to resist, to remember, to rise.

Can’t speak it. But will dance still. Music doesn’t need translation. You can be viking to a song from halfway across the world, no clue what the lyrics mean, but still feel every beat like it was made for you. That’s magic- it connects us beyond words. You don’t need to understand it to dance it, to cry to it, or to heal with it. So I guess without it. I’d be stuck over here.. and you over there with not much to bring us together. Not much fun.. right?

There goes sanity. Music keeps  us sane. From the spiritual depth of worship to the simple comfort of a soothing melody after a long day, it’s therapy. It’s healing. It’s how we cope, how we connect, how we carry on.

So, in short, a life without music would suck.
