Non special, special

Can you imagine a world full of Nelson Mandelas, not even full, just plenty of Mandela’s and Teresa’s and Gandhis and Hitlers. Yes, I used him there too. Because, like it or not, they were exceptional people. In their own way and they believed that they had a purpose and more often than not, a God-Given one and they lived and breathed that purpose and they were the top percentile or bottom depending on how we look at it, that everyone wants everyone to know. But can we all  be that? Or, more importantly, will it even be extraordinary if we’re all it?

Probably not, I think. And I also think that it’s beautiful and it’s a gift that more often than not, we take for granted.  We take the ordinary stuff so lightly that we don’t enjoy it. We forget that not being special  is freeing. We then just live. No pressure to always speak wisdom when a stranger walks up to you on the road. No spending every waking minute trying to live up to some extraordinarily and mostly unrealistic feat. Just being.

Waking up and enjoying the sun. Smelling the coffee, laughing at a silly joke with friends, getting stuck in traffic. Facing troubles that we’re all having somehow because one, nothing new under the sun and two, if it’s not new then somebody already figured a way out and I don’t have to think about how in the world I’m going to talk to my mother. But thank God for them that did.

Point here is, enjoy the ordinary. Just be where you are, then. No desire to be the top percentile,  fine if you want to. But I feel like we can enjoy life not being special.  That we can not all be special, at least not to everyone, but to those around us. That we can make an impact where we are, as we are without necessarily crashing everyone around us. That in taking joy in the ordinary we can be a joy to others around us. That we don’t have to be the 1 percentile or the 99th to make a difference.

To just be.

About Me

I’m Betty-the creator behind NdukuOutLoud. The name comes from my middle name, Nduku and “Out Loud” is my quiet rebellion against being, well…quiet. Naturally introverted, but this blog is where I speak up-about life, growth, and the everyday moments that shape us.

It’s raw, it’s real, and hopefully, it resonates with you too.
