Sand Here, Rocks There, Storms Everywhere

This is not a preaching. Not a sermon. Just a reminder.

“So then, anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded over, and the wind blew hard against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on rock. And anyone who hears these words of mine and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded over, the wind blew hard against that house, and it fell. And what a terrible fall that was!”
Matthew 7:24–27

We live in an age of endless input. Podcasts, TED talks, self-help books, motivational reels-there’s no shortage of words telling us how to live better. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: listening isn’t building. Reading isn’t building. Even agreeing isn’t building.

The parable of the two house builders isn’t about theology-it’s about action. One man builds on rock, the other on sand. Both end up with houses. Both probably look fine on sunny days. The difference only shows when the storm arrives.

And let’s be honest: building on rock is exhausting. It’s excavation, drilling, flattening, sweating. It’s the slow, unglamorous work of consistency. Sand, on the other hand, is easy. Quick. Effortless. Unlikely to survive a stormy season.

We all build something-habits, careers, relationships, identities. The question isn’t whether we’re building, but whether what we’re building can stand. Will it shelter us when the rain comes, or collapse with everything inside?

So maybe the challenge isn’t to consume more wisdom, but to obey the wisdom we already have. To do the work, even when it’s inconvenient. To keep showing up, even when it feels like nothing’s happening. Because the storm will come. And when it does, only the house on rock will remain.

Sandcastles are fun. But they’re not homes.
