You Chase, It Runs

We’ve all heard it: the more we chase happiness, the more elusive it becomes. It’s not just happiness, either. Even sleep plays this trick-the harder you try to fall asleep, the harder it is to simply drift off.

And yet, here we are. A generation waking up every day hell-bent on finding happiness. Sometimes in ourselves, often in someone else. We start relationships hoping they’ll be the missing piece, the cure for misery. But maybe the chase isn’t entirely our fault. Or maybe it is, and I’m just trying to absolve us of responsibility.

Exposure: The Double-Edged Sword

The real culprit might be exposure. Information at our fingertips, lifestyles one click away. We peek into closets full of shoes and handbags, scroll past couples laughing in grocery aisles, watch teenagers booking flights to Bali. And we think: If it were me, I’d be happy too.

Would we even want what we didn’t know existed?

Sure, it isn’t all bad. It teaches us new ways to live, fold fitted sheets, remove stains. But it also plants seeds of comparison. And comparison, as they say, is the thief of joy.

The Trap of External Happiness

We know the highlight reels aren’t the whole story. We know the glam hides private sadness. But still-we look, we want, we chase. We imagine that if we only had that, we’d finally be happy.

It happens. And if it hasn’t yet, it probably will.

Happiness as a Way of Being

Here’s the truth: happiness isn’t something you buy. It doesn’t come in a silver box or a bouquet of flowers. Happiness is a way of life.

It’s waking up and remembering that life itself is a gift.
It’s letting the sun warm your face and realizing it shines for you, for nature, for everyone.
It’s returning to yourself when the world overwhelms you-finding that place that feels like home.

A Benediction

So when the chase gets exhausting, I hope you remember this: you already have everything you need to be happy.

Happiness isn’t out there-it’s here. In the present. In the gift of being alive.

And most importantly, I hope that you are.
